About the Author
My name is Ray Tam and I am a Certified Personal Trainer by NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). My passion is to incorporate the most aspects of fitness into my daily life, and literally living the notion of health and fitness. Health and fitness should not be restricting our lifestyles, but rather be enjoyed as part of it. If you are interested in more about my personal journey in fitness, read on!
I have always been keen on outdoor sports since my childhood and was always involved in swimming, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, and all sorts of activities in the nature. But I really started my journey in fitness when I started my university career in Upstate New York at the age of 17.
As there was not much to do in Upstate New York and it was pretty much what everybody did, I started going to the gym on campus with friends. Although my original goal was just to get into a better shape and to socialise, I realised I became more and more attached to the very act of exercising itself to a point that it was more like an addiction. I was very interested in different aspects of fitness and spent most of my leisure time either reading articles about exercising or putting the theories into practice.
When I moved to New York City transferring to another university, I developed my interest in calisthenics as the gyms in New York City was anything but affordable for a student and I had to figure out a way for myself to keep my training going. Calisthenics became my perfect solution since there are so many parks in New York with pull up bars. I learnt most of my knowledge about calisthenics from various online sources primarily from YouTube channels and almost worked solely on calisthenics for over a year. Calisthenics really introduced me to another side of fitness where I can workout whenever, wherever with minimal equipments. Calisthenics also enabled me to keep my training going during my travels in between study breaks especially in undeveloped countries.
After getting a complimentary gym membership from one of my internships, I once again had access to weights and was surprised how my strength was not only kept but even increased while my bodyweight went down after a year of calisthenics (also from the 3 months I was literally SURVIVING in Central America with limited food)! I was fortunate enough to encounter one of the international powerlifting champions, Ellen Stein who took her time to give me quite a few pointers out of courtesy regardless of the fact that her advises should have been far from affordable for a poor student like me.
Right now I combine weight lifting with calisthenics for my training as I realise they can really compliment each other.
